We undertake Glint and Glare Assessments to identify potential impacts on light-sensitive receptors from solar farms, solar car ports, and roof mounted solar panels to satisfy planning requirements.

A Glint and Glare Assessment or Study is often required to assess any visual hazard with regard to light-sensitive receptors for solar (photovoltaic) developments. Particular consideration needs to be given to proposed solar developments which have the potential to impact upon:

  • aviation for example airports, aerodromes or helipads,
  • roads,
  • rail infrastructure, and
  • residential dwellings with a view of the proposed development.

We can assess solar farms, solar car ports, and roof mounted solar panels.

What is the difference between glint and glare?

Reflectivity refers to light that is reflected off surfaces (e.g. glazed surfaces). The potential effects of reflectivity are glint and glare. The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) ‘Technical Guidance for Evaluating Selected Solar Technologies on Airports’ provides the following glint and glare definitions:

  • Glint – “a momentary flash of bright light”
  • Glare – “a continuous source of bright light”

These present an ocular hazard to light sensitive receptors such as road users, train drivers, occupants of nearby dwellings, pilots, and air-traffic control personnel, as they can cause a brief, temporary or permanent eye damage

What is a glint and glare assessment?

A Glint and Glare Assessment or Study is often required to assess any visual hazard with regard to light-sensitive receptors for solar (photovoltaic) developments.

What is solar glare?

Solar glare is when sunlight is reflected from a surface and causes “a continuous source of bright light”, such as from a photovoltaic solar panel.
