NHS Fife

Mabbett reduces NHS Fife’s energy costs through decentralisation of boiler plant, saving £200,000 annually.

Approach and Delivery

NHS Fife applied for funding from Health Facilities Scotland through the Carbon Reduction Programme to replace existing steam boilers with new, high-efficiency gas-fired boilers. Mabbett were commissioned to conduct energy surveys at both sites. These took into account the layout of the site, the energy demand profile, potential development at the site, and other local options or opportunities for energy generation. The resulting outcome of the energy surveys decided that the best option was to decentralise the existing boiler plants at both hospitals. The existing steam boilers were replaced with high-efficiency gas-fired boilers and this has yielded a great saving.

Project Outcomes

  • Annual savings of around £200,000 across both sites.
  • Gas consumption reduced by around 35%.
  • Carbon emissions reduced by 1,200 tCO2e.
